Aspects of black (excerpt)  Music by Angela Linders and Dorothea Stockmar

On a metaphorical level black refers to something we can see without seeing. Something we have to explore by ourselves. It re-joins the eternal with the temporal, revealing hope. Insight may emerge in a prayer or contemplation.

Due to corona-cirsis since April 2020 exhibited on the Website of Manchester Cathedral and on the Website of the British Artist Philip Warton

In this time when we are closed to visitors because of the COVID19 pandemic, Manchester Cathedral invites you to visit our virtual art exhibition Aspects of Black by the German artist and death and grief counsellor Dorothea Stockmar and her husband Axel Stockmar.

This exhibition is about black, the colour which is an absence of colour. She writes, 'Black encourages searching for another framing of everyday reality.... it stands in opposition to a colourful life, longing for resolution at the threshold of another world.'

We hope that this exhibition will help you to think and prayer during this time of colour and darkness, emptiness and abundance.

You can view the pictures individually, or view as a video slideshow, with music by Angela Linders and Dorothea Stockmar.
